Album Review: Senses Fail – If There Is Light, It Will Find You

10 years ago – in the age of MySpace, thick black eyeliner & Steven’s Untitled Rock Show – the emo movement took off with bands like Hawthorne Heights, Paramore and of course, Senses Fail. Over the years we’ve upgraded to Facebook, learned how to properly apply eyeliner & we said goodbye to our beloved rock show – but most importantly, we are welcoming the 7th studio album from Senses Fail set to drop this Friday!

If There Is Light, It Will Find You really embodies who Senses Fail are as individuals and as musicians. This album was inspired by some of the hardest times in front-man, Buddy Nielsen’s, life – but hard times usually mean amazing art, and we certainly are so stoked on this album.

The album starts off with one of the first teaser singles released, “Double Cross“. It really touches on having to grow up and move forward from your past, which bring up feelings of uncertainty from moving on from what you’ve always known – people, passions, jobs. Having to remove all the toxic things from your life is one of the hardest parts of growing up and isn’t always the most clearcut – it’s the part of growing up no one really told you about and one of those things everyone has to find out for themselves.

The tone of the album brings back the roots of ‘old Senses Fail‘ with elevated music development. Further down the we get the track, “First Breath, Last Breath” – there’s no doubt Buddy is a family man and this track makes you feel everything someone who had been in a serious ‘adult relationship’ feels. Every. Damn. Emotion – all in under 3 minutes.

Of course no album release is complete without the release of at least 1 music video – insert “Gold Jacket, Green Jacket”. This is, hands down, my favorite track off this record. As a Millennial, we get blamed for everything, we are constantly criticized – our jobs, our education, our bodies, our minds, our opinions. Being a Millennial simply means that we are damned if we do, damned if don’t – so fuck it. At the end of the day, just be a decent person – that’s it. Do good and fuck the rest.

Before I leave you with a link to pre-order this killer album & a list of upcoming tour dates – we have to talk about the title track. “If There Is Light, It Will Find You” – the title really says it all. We all go through shit [some of us more than others], we have to force ourselves to get through some day and sometimes we really do need a little light to find us – just to let us know it’ll be ok. We may not always want to be in the light but when we are ready to come out of the darkness, it’ll be there to find us.

You can catch Senses Fail on tour starting at the end of the month & you can pre-order If There Is Light, It Will Find You Here. It really is a great album – Senses Fail makes it easy to relate & we will never get tired of that.
