While new comer, Maisy Kay, has only been in the scene since 2015 – she’s certainly making waves and creating her own unique platform for her brand to grow. With a mystical voice and lyrics that force emotion through your body complimented with melodies that throw you against the wall – we just had to sit down with Maisy to get more details on who she is, why she’s doing the things she is and what’s to come from this soulful songstress.
Babetalk: Thanks for taking the time to do thing. Lets start by having you introduce yourself and what your music style is like.
Maisy Kay: Thank you for taking the time to talk to me! My name is Maisy Kay, I’m a British singer-songwriter currently living is Los Angeles. I think I’d call my music style a mix between alternative and avant-garde pop. I grew up listening to the greats – Freddie Mercury, Celine Dion, Whitney Houston and so on, so I really try to incorporate some of the classic, organic elements into everything I do.
BT: You recently dropped your debut EP – Disguises – talk to us about the writing and recording process
MK: The special thing about the Disguises EP is that it’s actually a collection of 4 years worth of writing. When I first came to America, I spent a long time in artist development, trying to figure out my sound and what worked for me. This EP stemmed from us picking our favorite tracks from over the years.
BT: Out of the 6 tracks, do you have a favorite or one that holds more of a special meaning to you?
MK: I would say “Volcano” is my personal favorite. It was the hardest song I’ve ever written, and the process was incredibly emotional. I’m so proud of how it all came together, and every time I listen to it I get reminded of what inspired me to write it, and how I personally overcame it.
BT: Your track, “Heart Of The Ocean”, was actually featured in the documentary, Wonders of The Ocean 3D – how did that come about?
MK: The filmmakers of this wonderful documentary reached out to my label after hearing some of my music, asking if I could contribute to the film. After attending a screening, I promptly went home and 20 minutes later had this song. I’m so proud of the track and of getting to be a part of this important film.
BT: You’ve been doing a lot of different and new things with your music career – one of those things being that you partnered with Rok Vision and developed an app [Maisy Kay Disguises, available on Apple & Google/Android] to share content directly with your fans on a more personal level. What gave you the idea to go this route?
MK: I realized that social media is a huge influence in the present day, it’s a way for fans to see the more intimate parts of a person’s life. I wanted to take this a step further, and create a way to connect on a more personal level with my audience.
BT: Is there any type of exclusive content that the user gets that they can’t find on your regular social media(s)?
MK: Definitely, with the app you can see songs that I’ve never released, behind the scenes footage that’s exclusive to the app, new videos and lyrics, things that I’ve never shared on my social media will be available as a way to really delve into my own process as an artist.
BT: So your music’s been featured in a documentary, you’ve developed an app, what’s next? What’s the game plan for 2018?
MK: I have a couple big projects coming up, one is my first full length album, the other is one that I’m absolutely dying to talk about but can’t yet. However I will say, keep your eyes peeled for mid 2018, as some pretty exciting things will be coming your way!
BT: Is there anyone you’re dying to work with or collab with in the coming year?
MK: I’d honestly love to work with Saint Mesa, I adored his new single ,”Lion“, the production of that song is truly astounding.
BT: What’s the #1 thing you want for your music and your career?
MK: More than anything, I want my music to be a way to help the people who listen to it. Music has always been my own form of personal therapy, both in listening to other’s work and creating my own. I would love for my songs to provide support for listeners going through a tough time. If I can make anybody feel better about what they’re dealing with, I’ll be happy.
BT: 2018 is going to be super exciting for you and your music, we really appreciate you taking the time to talk to us – is there anything else you’d like to tell our readers & your fans?
MK: Thank you so much to everyone who listens to my music and supports me. I truly wouldn’t be here without you, you’ve made my dream a reality.
So there you have it – an app with exclusive content, something terribly exciting to come in mid-2018 and down to earth artist who really wants to tear down the artificial walls that have been put up to separate artist and fan.
